Whenever I play a party-based RPG, I almost always end up with favorites, primarily because it would be nearly impossible for me to like every character equally when they can differ so drastically in how they play and the personalities they bring to the group. But there's a difference between having a favorite and having a party member who almost never leaves the bench, whether that's because they aren't particularly useful in combat or, perhaps even worse, they're simply not all that interesting to have around. I've played plenty of RPGs where someone ends up falling into one of those categories before long, and once that happens, it can be pretty hard for me to justify giving them another chance.
