The source material for most anime tends to be vastly superior to its adaptations. A large majority of the manga that can be considered true masterpieces come straight out of the minds of brilliant artists who know their worlds and characters better than anyone. As such, it's hard for an anime adaptation to replicate the same level of care and attention to detail.
